What is Mercilon 28?
Mercilon containing ingredients ethinylestradiol and desogestrel are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. The medication is considered a combined hormonal contraceptive, more commonly known as “the pill”. The tablets work by making it more difficult for sperm to cross the vagina into the womb and reaching an egg as well as tricking the body into thinking ovulation has already happened and preventing ripened eggs from being released from the ovaries each month. Some women may also use the drugs to regulate and make their menstrual periods lighter and less painful.
How is Mercilon 28 used?
Mercilon should be taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken in a 28 day cycle with 21 days on the drug and a 7 day rest period. It can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a drink of water. Contact a doctor for the correct starting day and treatment cycle as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. You will still be protected if you miss 1 pill but you will not be protected against pregnancy if you miss 2 or more pills.
