What is Abilify?
Abilify is an atypical antipsychotic medication that is used to treat certain mental and mood disorders. It works by acting on neurotransmitters in the brain and stabilizing dopamine and serotonin levels. By stabilizing neurotransmitters it can be used alone or with other medication to control and treat bipolar disorder, irritable behavior, schizophrenia, mood swings, mania and autistic disorder.
How is Abilify used?
Abilify is usually taken orally once daily and can be taken with or without food. Dosage will vary depending on the patient’s condition and reaction to the medication. It is not advised to take any more or less than the prescribed dosage, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. It may take several weeks before the medication shows its effectiveness, take the tablets regularly for maximum benefits. Patients should not stop the treatment without consulting a doctor as symptoms may return worst than before or suffer severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Patients using Abilify may suffer side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Drowsiness
- Insomnia
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Blurred vision
- Weight gain
- Stomach pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Seizures
- High fever
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Increased anxiety
- Muscle spasm or stiffness
Warnings
The medication should not be used to treat dementia or related behaviors. Use with caution in elderly people as side effects may prove to be fatal.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Abilify is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
