What is Abilify?
Abilify works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain to maintain mental balance. The active ingredient aripiprazole belongs to the atypical antipsychotics group of medication. It is used to treat certain mood and mental disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The tablet can also be used in conjunction with other medications to treat major depressive disorder.
How is Abilify used?
Abilify should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually once daily. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their reaction to the medication. To decrease the risk of side effects, your doctor may gradually increase your dosage at the start of the treatment. Do not discontinue the medication without contacting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause a relapse in the patient’s condition.
Adverse effects
Abilify may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Unexplained weight gain
- Insomnia
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Signs of infection
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Jaundice
- Seizures
- Vision or speech problems
- Confusion
- Tremors
- Irregular heartbeats
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Abilify is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
