What is Accupril?
Accupril works by decreasing certain chemicals that cause the blood vessels to tighten up to allow for easier blood flow and enabling the heart to pump blood more efficiently. The active ingredient quinapril belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. The medication can be used to treat heart failure and high blood pressure (hypertension).
How is Accupril used?
Accupril should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times daily. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment thinking the medication is not working as it may take up to several weeks before the full effects of the drug are felt.
Adverse effects
Accupril may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Excessive fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Dry cough
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Signs of infection
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Change in the amount of urine
- Irregular heartbeat
- High potassium blood levels
- Jaundice
- Fainting
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Accupril is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
