What is Aldactone?
Aldactone containing the active ingredient spironolactone belongs to a group of drugs called potassium sparing diuretics. It is mainly used to treat fluid retention caused by heart failure, kidney problems or liver diseases while preventing the body from absorbing excess amounts of salt to keep potassium levels from getting too low. Some patients may also use the medication to treat hyperaldosteronism and high blood pressure.
How is Aldactone used?
Aldactone is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. It is recommended to take the tablets with some food or milk to prevent an upset stomach. The medication is usually taken in the day before 6pm to prevent having to wake up during the night to urinate. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
Adverse effects
Patients using Aldactone may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

- Stomach pain

- Muscle pain
- Irregular heartbeat

- Signs of infection
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Aldactone is not always suitable for all patients.
