What is Aldactone?
Aldactone containing the active ingredient spironolactone belongs to a group of drugs called potassium sparing diuretics. It is mainly used to treat fluid retention caused by heart failure, kidney problems or liver disease as well as preventing the body from absorbing too much salt to keep potassium levels from getting too low. Some patients may also use the medication to treat hyperaldosteronism and high blood pressure.
How is Aldactone used?
Aldactone is usually taken once or twice per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, take the tablet with some food or a glass of milk. The medication is usually taken in the day before 6pm to prevent having to wake up during the night to urinate. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
