What is Aldara 5% Cream?
Aldara 5% Cream containing the active ingredient imiquimod is considered an immune response modifiers or immunomodulator type of medication. It works by assisting the activation of the immune system to fight abnormal skin growths. It is used to treat a condition caused by too much sun exposure on the face and scalp called actinic keratoses and a minor form of skin cancer called superficial basal cell carcinoma. Some people may also use the cream to treat external genital warts and warts around the anus.
How is Aldara 5% Cream used?
Aldara 5% Cream is usually applied topically once per day, 2 to 5 days a weeks for up to 16 weeks unless otherwise directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Prior to applying the cream, wash your hands and the affected area with mild soap and water and allow it to dry. Apply a thin layer of cream to the area to be treated and gently massage it into the skin until it disappears. It should be applied just before going to sleep and left on the area for the amount of time your doctor has told you to do so. After the treatment time is over, wash the area with mild soap and water to remove any cream.
Adverse effects
Patients using Aldara 5% Cream may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Redness, itching, burning or inflammation at application site
- Flaking, scaling, dry or thickening skin
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Flu like symptoms
- Muscle aches and pains
- Scabbing and crusting of skin
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The medication comes in single use sachets, throw away any open packets if you do not use all of the cream.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Aldara 5% Cream is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
