What is Allegra?
Allegra is an antihistamine used in the treatment of hay fever, allergy symptoms and urticaria. It blocks the natural substance histamine which is the substance that causes allergic reactions when in contact with allergen such as pollen, animal fur, dust mites and insect bites. It is used to relieve symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose or eyes, hives and itching.
How is Allegra used?
Allegra is usually taken with water 1 to 2 times daily or as directed by a doctor. It should not be taken with any other liquid as it may hinder the absorption of the drug. It is not recommended to take more or less than the prescribed amount, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. Do not stop the treatment without consulting a doctor as symptoms may return and become worst. The medication is a control and relief for symptoms and cannot be used as cure for allergies.
Adverse effects
Patients usually do not encounter side effects, however, Allegra may cause minor side effects such as:
- Cough
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach
- Headache
- nausea
- Diarrhea
- Drowsiness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Insomnia
- Irregular heart rate
- Swelling
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Allegra is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
