What is Allegra?
Allegra is an antihistamine that can be used to relieve allergy symptoms, urticaria and hay fever. When the immune system comes in contact with allergen such as dust mites, animal fur, insect bites and pollen the body produces the self defense substance histamine that can cause allergic reactions. By blocking histamine the medication can be used to relieve symptoms such as sneezing, hives, itching, runny nose and itchy nose or eyes.
How is Allegra used?
Allegra is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day with water or as directed by a doctor. Taking the medication with other liquids may hinder the absorption of the drug. Dosage depends on the patient’s use and response to the treatment, it is not recommended to take more or less than the prescribed amount, contact a doctor for the proper dosage. Even should symptoms become better, patients should not stop medication without consulting a doctor as symptoms might return and become worst. The medication is a relief medication and cannot be used as a cure for allergies.
Adverse effects
Patients usually do not encounter side effects, however, Allegra may cause side effects such as:
- Cough
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach
- Headache
- nausea
- Diarrhea
- Drowsiness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Insomnia
- Irregular heart rate
- Swelling
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Allegra is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
