What is Amaryl?
Amaryl containing the active ingredient glimepiride is a type of medicine called a sulfonylurea. When the medication is used with a proper diet and exercise program, it can control high blood sugar and help the body use insulin efficiently in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar can help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems. Controlling diabetes can also decrease the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
How is Amaryl used?
Amaryl is usually taken once daily in the morning or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken orally with breakfast or the first main meal of the day along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. To decrease the risk of side effects, the doctor may prescribe a low initial dose and gradually increase the dosage.
Adverse effects
Patients using Amaryl may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Stomach pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Jaundice
- Signs of infection
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Hallucinations
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Dark urine
- Trouble breathing
Warnings
The medication should only be used in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and should not be used by patients with type 1 diabetes.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Amaryl is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
