What is AmBisome?
AmBisome is a powder form of the antifungal antibiotic Liposomal Amphotericin B. A treatment for varying different fungal infections, it is indicated for the treatment of systemic fungal infections of Aspergillus species, Candida species, and/or Cryptococcus species, Cryptococcal meningitis and Visceral Leishmaniasis.
AmBisome (Liposomal Amphotericin B) is an antifungal antibiotic. It kills the fungus responsible for infection and prevent it spreading further.
How is AmBisome used?
Each packst of AmBisome contains a vial of Liposomal Amphotericin B powder suitable for administration through an intravenous drip. The powedermust be reconstituted in a suitable solution prior to use. The dosage required for your condition will be prescribed by your doctor.
Adverse effects
AmBisome can cause a wide range of different side effects, some more common than others.
Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of the following:
- chills
- fever
- irregular heartbeat
- muscle cramps or pain
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- Back pain
- chest pain
- dark urine
- difficulty in breathing
- headache
- yellowing of eyes or skin
- Difficulty in swallowing
- hives
- itching, especially of feet or hands
- reddening of skin, especially around ears
- swelling of eyes, face, or inside of nose
- unusual tiredness or weakness (sudden and severe)
These side effects should be only mild and temporary. Tell your doctor if they become a problem or do not go away:
- abdominal pain
- cough
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- nausea
- vomiting
- Less common
- skin rash
Warnings
AmBisome can be used by most people, but there are some cases where it is contraindicated. Tell your doctor if any of the following apply to you:
- you are allergic to any medicines
- you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- you are taking any azole antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, etc.)
- have had any problems with your kidneys
