What is Amitrip-50?
Amitrip-50 is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) that can help restore mental balance by balancing chemicals in the brain. It prolongs mood lightening effects by preventing serotonin and noradrenaline from being reabsorbed back into the brain to relieve signs of depression. It can be used to relieve insomnia, increase energy levels, anxiety and tension. Some patients may use it to prevent and treat migraine headaches, nerve pain and eating disorders. It can also be used to treat bedwetting for kids.
How is Amitrip-50 used?
Amitrip-50 should be taken orally 1 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. For patients who only need to take the medication once per day, try to take it near bed time to prevent daytime drowsiness. The dosage will depend on the patient’s condition and their reaction to the medication. It is not recommended to take more or less than the prescribed amount, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. It is not recommended to discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor even should patients feel better as symptoms may return worse than before.
Adverse effects
Patients using Amitrip-50 may encounter side effects such as:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Unpleasant taste in mouth
- Blurred vision
- Constipation
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Chest pain
- Sudden numbness
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty passing urine
- Speech difficulty
- Fainting
- Jaundice
Warnings
The medication should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOI) or moclobemide treatments as they my interact with amitriptyline hydrochloride.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Amitrip-50 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
