What is Ampicillin?
Ampicillin is considered a penicillin type of antibiotics used to treat infections caused by bacteria. It works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls and killing the bacteria. The medication can be used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, gonorrhea, E. coli, salmonella, as well as infections to the ear, blood, stomach and intestines. It can be used to treat bacterial infections but cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
How is Ampicillin used?
Ampicillin is usually taken orally 4 times per day, 6 hours apart or as otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken on an empty stomach along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. Continue to take the capsules until the fully prescribed dosage is complete, even if conditions have cleared up, as abruptly discontinuing the medication can cause the symptoms to return and allow the bacteria to become harder to treat. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not broken, crushed or chewed prior to consuming.
