What is Ampicillin?
Ampicillin works by interfering with bacteria's ability to form cell walls to kill the bacteria. The penicillin type of antibiotics is used to treat several types of infections caused by bacteria. It can be used to treat conditions such as salmonella, E. coli, gonorrhea, bronchitis, pneumonia as well as infections to the intestines, stomach, blood and ear. It can be used to treat bacterial infections but cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
How is Ampicillin used?
Ampicillin is usually taken orally 4 times daily at least 6 hours apart or as directed by a doctor. The medication is generally taken on an empty stomach along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment before the fully prescribed amount is completed as doing so may cause the infection to return and allow the bacteria to become immune to the antibiotics. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not crushed, broken or chewed prior to consumption.
Adverse effects
Taking Ampicillin may cause minor side effects such as:
- Vaginal infections
- Persistent sore throat or fever
- Jaundice
- Upset stomach
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Ampicillin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
