What is Antabuse?
Antabuse containing the active ingredient disulfiram is considered an aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitor type of medication. The medication should be used along with counseling and support to treat alcoholism. The tablets work by interfering with the metabolism of alcohol to cause unpleasant effects when even small amounts of alcohol are consumed. The unpleasant effects caused by consuming alcohol after using the medication may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, blurred vision, confusion, breathing difficulty and anxiety.
How is Antabuse used?
Antabuse is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. The tablets can be crushed and mixed with water, juice, soft drinks or milk to be consumed as a liquid.
Adverse effects
Patients using Antabuse may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Drowsiness
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Acne
- Metallic taste in mouth
- Impotence
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision changes
- Mental or mood changes
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Jaundice
- Dark urine
- Loss of coordination
Warnings
The medication can be used in the treatment of alcoholism but cannot be used as a cure for it.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Antabuse is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
