What is Apo-Cimetidine?
Apo-Cimetidine containing the active ingredient cimetidine is considered a histamine receptor antagonist or H2 receptor antagonist type of medication. The medication works by preventing an excessive amount of stomach acid from being produced. It can be used to prevent and treat stomach and intestine ulcers caused by too much stomach acid (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). Some people may also use it in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus and causes heartburn.
How is Apo-Cimetidine used?
Apo-Cimetidine is usually taken orally 1 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To prevent heartburn, the tablets should be taken within 30 minutes of eating a meal as well as once at bedtime. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Patients using Apo-Cimetidine may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Diarrhea
- Breast enlargement (in men)
- Excessive fatigue
- Muscle or joint pain
- Mental or mood changes
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Do not use the medication for over 14 consecutive days without consulting a doctor.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Apo-Cimetidine is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
