What is Apo-Moclobemide?
Apo-Moclobemide is a reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used to treat signs of severe depression and social anxiety. It works by increasing monoamines to repair chemical imbalances in the brain. It has proven effective in treating psychotic depression, agitated depression, neurotic depression, unipolar endogenous depression and reactive depression. Some people may also use it to treat ADHD, smoking cessation, panic disorder or migraine headaches.
How is Apo-Moclobemide used?
Apo-Moclobemide is usually taken orally in 2 divided doses daily. The recommended initial dose should be 300mg daily and depending on the patient can be increased to 600mg or decreased to 150mg daily. Dosage will depend on the patient’s condition and reaction to the medication. Patients should take the exact dose that is prescribed by a doctor and should not increase or decrease their dosage without consulting a doctor, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. Do not stop the treatment without contacting a doctor as symptoms may return or the patient may encounter severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Patients using Apo-Moclobemide may encounter side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Agitation
Severe side effects are usually very rarely seen, however, contact a doctor immediately should you encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Paraesthesia
- Blurred vision
- Confusion
- Hypotension
Warnings
Do not take the medication along with tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) or serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) as they may interact with the medication.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Apo-Moclobemide is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
