What is Apoquel?
Apoquel 16mg contains Oclacitinib Maleate, a drug that can help relieve itching caused by allergic dermatitis and control of atopic dermatitis in dogs. Apoquel is not a corticosteroid or an anthistamine. It works by inhibiting pruritogenic cytokines, pro-inflammatory cytokines and cytokines involved in allergy that are dependent on JAK1 or JAK3 enzyme activity.
How is Apoquel used?
Apoquel 16mg is offered in a pack of 10 tablets. Each tablet contains 16mg of the active ingredient Oclacitinib Maleate.
Dosages are prescribed depending on the body weight of the dog. A starting dosage of 0.18 and 0.27 mg of oclactinib per lb is usually given twice daily for up to 14 days, and then once daily as a maintainence dose.
Adverse effects
The most common side effects of Apoquel are vomiting and diarrhea. Other reported side effects are lethargy, anorexia, skin irritation or infection, and ear irritation or infection.
Warnings
Apoquel is not to be taken by dogs less than 12 months old or in dogs with serious infections.
Apoquel can make a dog more susceptible to infection including demodicosis and neoplasia.
