What is Apoquel?
Apoquel (Oclacitinib Maleate) is used to help control severe itching in dogs as a result of allergic dermatitis and control of atopic dermatitis.
Apoquel inhibits pruritogenic cytokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines. It also inhibits cytokines involved in allergy that are dependent on JAK1 or JAK3 enzyme activity.
How is Apoquel used?
Apoquel 3.6mg comes in a pack of 10 tablets. Each tablet contains 3.6mg of Oclacitinib Maleate.
Your dog will be prescribed a dosage according to its body weight. The dosage is usually between 0.18 and 0.27 mg of oclactinib per lb of body weight. This dosage is given twice daily for up to a period of 14 days. This is followed by a daily dose for maintainence therapy.
Adverse effects
The most common side effects associated with Apoquel are vomiting and diarrhea. Other side effects your dog may experience include lethargy, anorexia, skin irritation or infection, and ear irritation or infection.
Warnings
Apoquel should not be given to dogs under 12 months old or in dogs with serious infections.
Apoquel may increase the dog's risk of infection including demodicosis and neoplasia. Dogs taking Apoquel will need to be monitored for this.
Apoquel is for use in dogs only. Do not give to other pets. It is not for human consumption.
