What is Atacand?
Atacand can be used alone or along with other medication to treat congestive heart failures and hypertension (high blood pressure). The active ingredient candesartan cilexetil is considered an angiotensin II receptor antagonist type of medication. It works by blocking certain natural substances in the body to help relax blood vessels, allowing easier blood flow and enabling the heart to pump blood more efficiently. Controlling high blood pressure can help reduce kidney problems, strokes and heart attacks.
How is Atacand used?
Atacand is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the treatment. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
Adverse effects
Atacand may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Fainting
- Decreased urination
- High potassium blood levels
- Chest infections
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Dizziness
- Irregular heartbeat
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Atacand is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
