What is Augmentin?
Augmentin containing the active ingredients amoxicillin and clavulanate acid is considered a penicillin type of antibiotics. The medication works by fighting the growth and killing bacteria in the body. It is mainly prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis media, urinary tract infections (UTI), tonsillitis and skin infections. The tablets can be used to treat bacterial infections but cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
How is Augmentin used?
Augmentin is usually taken orally 3 times per day or as otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken with some food along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or split prior to consumption.
Adverse effects
Patients using Augmentin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Excessive fatigue
- Jaundice
- New signs of infection
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Augmentin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
