What is Bactroban?
Bactroban containing the active ingredient mupirocin is considered an antibacterial type of medication. The medication works by preventing the production of essential proteins needed by bacteria to survive. The ointment is used to treat certain bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis and furunculosis.
How is Bactroban used?
Bactroban is usually applied topically 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Prior to applying the ointment, wash and dry your hands and the affected area thoroughly. Apply a thin film of the ointment onto the affected area and gently massage it in until it is evenly distributed. The treated area may be covered with a bandage or gauze. Wash your hands immediately after applying the medication.
Adverse effects
Patients using Bactroban may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Burning, stinging, itching or pain at application site
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Contact dermatitis
- Dry skin
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Bactroban is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
