What is Baytril?
Baytril works by interfering with bacterial DNA metabolism to kill bacteria. The active ingredient enrofloxacin is a broad spectrum antimicrobial substance belonging to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics. The tablets can be used by cats and dogs to treat bacterial infections such as alimentary, respiratory and urogenital tracts infections, secondary wound infections, skin infections and otitis externa.
How is Baytril used?
Baytril should be given to pets 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a veterinarian. The tablets can be given to your pet directly or wrapped up in meat or sausages to be fed to the pet. Give plenty of water to your pet while using the medication and avoid all dairy products as it may alter the amount of the drug in the bloodstream. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet's weight, condition being treated and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Pets using Baytril may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Seizures
- Lethargy
- Depression
- Ataxia
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Anorexia
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Do not give to pregnant pets and pets below 1 year of age as the medication has detrimental effects on growing joints and bones.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Baytril is not always suitable for all patients.
