What is Belustine 40?
Belustine containing the active ingredient lomustine is considered an alkylating agent type of medication. The medication works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells as well as limiting them spreading throughout the body. Patients should use the medication to treat brain tumors and Hodgkin's disease when other types of treatment or medications have not improved their condition.
How is Belustine 40 used?
Belustine is usually taken orally once every 6 to 8 weeks or as directed by a doctor. To prevent nausea or vomiting, it is recommended to take the capsules on an empty stomach along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on any other treatments, the patient's weight and their response to the therapy. Always swallow the capsules whole and not crush, chew or split it prior to consumption.
Adverse effects
Patients using Belustine may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Temporary hair loss
- Mouth or lip sores
- Diarrhea
- Unusual fatigue or weakness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision problems
- Slurred or stuttering speech
- Signs of infection
- Confusion or disorientation
- Jaundice
- Fainting
Warnings
Always wear rubber or latex gloves when handling the capsules to ensure it does not come into contact with the skin.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Belustine 40 is not always suitable for all patients.
