What is Botox?
Botox containing the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A is produced from the bacteria that cause botulism. It can be used to weaken or paralyze certain muscles and block certain nerves. The medication can be used to treat a variety of conditions including cervical dystonia, muscle spasms, hyperhidrosis, blepharospasm, strabismus, overactive bladder, chronic migraine headaches and even temporary removal of facial wrinkles.
How is Botox used?
Botox should be injected directly into the muscle as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the treatment. The injection can be given into more than one area at a time depending on the patient’s condition. The injection should only be given by a trained medical professional, even when used for cosmetic purposes. The medication may take up to 2 weeks after the injection before symptoms begin to improve.

Patients injecting Botox may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Muscle weakness where the medication was injected
- Bruising, bleeding or pain where injection was given
