What is Brilinta?
Brilinta (Ticagrelor) is indicated in the treatment of patients who have suffered from heart attacks or angina resulting from used to help minimize the risk of repeat heart attacks, strokes or blood clots in people who have had heart problems or chest pains in the past due to a lack of oxygen supply. Brilinta is taken along with aspirin to stop platelets sticking together and clogging to form a clot in your blood vessels.
How is Brilinta used?
Brilinta comes packaged in a box of 14 tablets, each containing 90mg of Ticagrelor.
Your doctor will prescribe a dosage for you to take on a daily basis, as well as a dosage of aspirin to take along with Brilinta.
Brilinta tablets can be taken with or without food, and can be swallowed whole or crushed and mixed with liquid to make them easier to swallow.
Adverse effects
The most threatening side effect of Brilinta is serious bleeding due to the inhibition of coagulation. If this goes unnoticed and/or untreated, it can become fatal.
The bleeding may be internal. Signs to look out for include:
- excessive or uncontrollable bleeding
- discolored urine (red, pink or brown)
- vomitting blood
- red or black, tarry stools
- coughing up blood
While taking Brilinta you will bruise more easily, bleed more easily, may experience more nose bleeds, and may need longer for bleeding to stop.
Warnings
Brilinta interheres with the way platelets coagulate in the blood. This can have implications for wound healing. Tell your doctor if you have had any bleeding problems, or have had recent serious injury or surgery. Your doctor should also be aware if you plan to have any surgery or dental work before prescribing Brilinta. If you have stomach ulcers, Brilinta can cause complications.
Some medicines may have unfavorable interactions with Brilinta. This may iclude:
- HIV medicines
- heart medicines
- hypertension medicines
- cholesterol medicines
- oral anti-fungal medicines
- anti-seizure medicines
- blood thinners
- rifampin
