What is Calgel?
Calgel containing the active ingredients lidocaine and cetylpyridinium chloride is a local anaesthetic and mild antiseptic type of medication. The gel works by temporarily blocking the pathway of pain signals to momentarily relive pain at the application site. The medication should be applied to infants to help relieve irritation, soreness and pain to the gums caused by teething.
How is Calgel used?
Calgel should be applied directly to the gums 1 to 6 times per day or as directed by a doctor. If necessary, the gel can be reapplied but only after an interval of at least 20 minutes. Prior to applying the gel, wash and dry your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Squeeze a small strip, 7 to 8mm of gel onto a fingertip or a small cotton pad and carefully apply to the affected area. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the infant’s condition and their response to the therapy.
