What is Captopril?
Captopril belongs to a class of medication called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. The medication works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels to allow easier blood flow and the heart to pump blood more efficiently. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) which can help prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. Some people may also use it to treat congestive heart failure, kidney problems caused by diabetes and to improve survival after a heart attack.
How is Captopril used?
Captopril is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken on an empty stomach, 1 hour prior to or 2 hours after a meal, along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as there are usually no visible symptoms of hypertension. It can be used to treat high blood pressure but cannot be used to cure it.
