What is Cardizem CD?
Cardizem CD works by relaxing the blood vessels and muscles of the heart to allow the heart to pump blood more smoothly. The active ingredient diltiazem hydrochloride is considered a calcium channel blocker type of medication. The medication is mainly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) but can also be used to treat chest pain (angina) and other heart conditions. Treating hypertension can help prevent heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems.
How is Cardizem CD used?
Cardizem CD should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Always swallow the capsules whole and not crush, chew or open the capsules to prevent the entire contents of the drug from being released at once. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as patients with high blood pressure usually have no visible symptoms.
