What is Cardizem CD?
Cardizem CD containing the active ingredient diltiazem hydrochloride belongs to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels to allow the heart to pump blood more smoothly. The medication can be used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain) and other heart conditions. Lowering high blood pressure can help prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.
How is Cardizem CD used?
Cardizem CD is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, broken or opened to prevent all of the drug from being released at one time. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as patients with hypertension usually have no visible symptoms.
