What is CeeNU?
CeeNU containing the active ingredient lomustine belongs to a class of medications called alkylating agents. The chemotherapy medicine is often used in combination with radiation therapy and other medication to stop the growth and multiplying of cancerous cells. It is prescribed to treat certain types of brain tumors and Hodgkin’s disease (Hodgkin’s lymphoma). Some patients may also use the drug in the treatment of skin, lung, kidney, stomach, testicular, cervical, ovarian and breast cancer.
How is CeeNU used?
CeeNU is usually taken orally once every 6 weeks unless otherwise directed by a doctor. To reduce the risks of initial nausea and vomiting, it may be optimal to take the capsules on an empty stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. The capsules should always be handled with rubber or latex gloves and pregnant or women who may become pregnant should not handle the medication or breathe the dust from the capsules at all.
Adverse effects
Patients using CeeNU may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Mouth sores
- Temporary hair loss
- Unusual fatigue
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Vision problems
- Jaundice
- Feeling confused or disoriented
- Swelling in ankles or feet
- Change in amount of urine
Warnings
Regular blood tests are required during treatment as the medication will eliminate healthy blood cells along with cancer cells.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
CeeNU is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
