What is Celebrex?
Celebrex works by blocking production of the natural substance prostaglandins which causes pain and inflammation when an injury occurs. The active ingredient celecoxib is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) type of medication. It is generally prescribed to treat and control conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Some patients may also use the medication to relieve menstrual pain and discomfort.
How is Celebrex used?
Celebrex is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by your doctor. It should be taken with plenty of water along with some food to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s reaction to the medication and the condition being treated.
Adverse effects
Patients using Celebrex may encounter side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Bloating or gas
- Upset stomach
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Jaundice
- Changes in vision
- Coughing up blood
- Rapid and unexplained weight gain
- Black, bloody or tarry stools
- Chest pain
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Celebrex is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
