What is Cerenia?
Cerenia containing the active ingredient maropitant is considered a veterinary antiemetic type of medication. The medication works by blocking substance P, the main substance that causes vomiting reaction when triggered in the brain. The non sedating tablets can be used by dog owners to prevent chronic vomiting and acute vomiting caused by motion sickness.
How is Cerenia used?
Cerenia is usually given to the pet orally once per day or as directed by a veterinarian. For maximum effectiveness it should be given 1 hour prior to a meal or 2 hours prior to travel. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s weight, condition and their response to the therapy. It is not recommended to take the tablets for more than 2 consecutive days.
Adverse effects
Pets given Cerenia may encounter minor side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Drowsiness
- Lethargy
- Drooling
- Lack of appetite
- Anxiety
- Trembling or tremors
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The medication is recommended for use in dogs 8 weeks and older.
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Cosequin DS Chewable Tablets is not always suitable for all animals.
