What is Cerenia?
Cerenia with the active ingredient maropitant is an effective treatment for motion sickness and acute vomiting in dogs. It prevents vomiting in dogs by blocking vomiting signals from entering the dog's brain. It is a safe, effective and non sedating medication that should only be given to dogs 16 weeks of age or older.
How is Cerenia used?
Cerenia is usually taken orally once a day and is safe to take 2 days in a row. To prevent motion sickness the tablet should be given to the dog 2 hours prior to any travel. Dogs should not be fed 1 hour prior to taking the medication. The dosage will depend on the condition and weight of the dog, contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage.
Adverse effects
Cerenia may cause side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Lack of appetite
- Drowsiness
- Lethargy
- Drooling
Contact a veterinarian should side effects persist.
Warnings
The tablets should not be given along with fatty foods as they may prevent the tablet from dissolving and delaying the effectiveness of the medication.
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
