Uses

Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride) is prescribed for patients with insulin-independent type of diabetes mellitus for the lowering blood glucose level and prevention of complications diabetes mellitus.

Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride) lowers hyperglycemia due to three main mechanisms of action:

• inhibits glycogenesis and liver glycogenolysis, reducing the production of glucose by the body
• improves the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin, and thus improves the capture and utilization of glucose
• reduces intestinal absorption of glucose.

Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride) also affects glycogen synthase and stimulates intracellular glycogen synthesis.

Metformin has a positive effect on the lipid balance - it reduces the amount of triglycerides and low density lipoprotein.

Metformin does not increase the level of insulin.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage is prescribed by the doctor individually for each patient. It depends on many factors, for example functioning of the kidneys, severity of diabetes mellitus.

Usually, Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride) is prescribed as a starting therapy in the dosage of 1 tablet 2-3 times a day during or after a meal.

10-15 days after the start of treatment, it is necessary to adjust the dose according to the results of the blood glucose level.

Side effects

The use of Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride) may cause side effects in some patients including:

• rash,
• dermatitis,
• loss of appetite,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• diarrhea,
• abdominal pain
• flatulence,
• metallic taste in the mouth,
• hypoglycemia.

With prolonged use of Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride), the absorption of vitamin B12 may decrease and, accordingly, the lowering of its serum level.

Precautions

During treatment with Cetapin XR 500mg (Metformin Hydrochloride), alcohol, alcohol-based drugs and iodine-containing X-ray contrast media should be avoided as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis
