What is Champix?
Champix containing the active ingredient varenicline is considered a smoking cessation aid. It will help reduce the urge to smoke and relieve withdrawal symptoms by blocking the pleasant effects of nicotine on the brain. The medication should be used in combination with education materials, counseling, support and determination to break the habit and successfully stop smoking.
How is Champix used?
Champix is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. To start the treatment, pick a quit smoking date and start the medication 1 week before the date. Alternatively, the patient can start the medication and choose a quite date between 8 and 35 days after starting the treatment. The treatment usually lasts 12 weeks with a low initial dose and gradually increasing the dosage over the first several days of treatment.
Adverse effects
Patients using Champix may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Vomiting
- Drowsiness
- Constipation
- Gas
- Insomnia or unusual dreams
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision changes
- Confusion
- Chest pain
- Pain on one side of the body
- Speech difficulties
- Pain in the legs
Warnings
Contact a doctor if you still have not stopped smoking after 12 weeks of treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Champix is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
