What is Champix?
Champix is used along with education materials, support, counseling and self determination to successfully stop smoking. The active ingredient varenicline is considered a smoking cessation aid type of medication. It works by blocking the pleasant effects of nicotine on the brain to help reduce the urge to smoke and relieve withdrawal symptoms.
How is Champix used?
Champix should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times daily. The tablets should be taken with a full glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. The treatment usually lasts 12 weeks starting with a low initial dose and gradually increasing the dosage over the first several days of treatment.
Adverse effects
Champix may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Insomnia or unusual dreams
- Gas
- Constipation
- Drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Pain in the legs
- Speech difficulties
- Pain on one side of the body
- Chest pain
- Confusion
- Vision changes
Warnings
Contact a doctor if you still have not stopped smoking after 12 weeks of treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Champix is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
