What is Coumadin?
Coumadin can help decrease the clotting ability of blood to treat or prevent blood clots from forming or growing larger in the blood and blood vessels. The active ingredient warfarin sodium belongs to a class of medications called anticoagulants (blood thinners). It is prescribed for patients with prosthetic heart valves, irregular heartbeats and people who have suffered a heart attack to prevent heart attacks, strokes or blood clots in the brain, lungs, veins and arteries.
How is Coumadin used?
Coumadin should be used as directed by a doctor, usually once per day. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on any laboratory tests administered, the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. While taking the medication, try to avoid a sudden large decrease or increase in foods that are high in vitamin K as they may affect how the medication works in the body.
Adverse effects
Coumadin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Excessive gas
- Hair loss
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Bloating
- Vomiting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Signs of infection
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Altered sense of taste
- Jaundice
- Prolonged bleeding from wounds
Warnings
If you are trying to lose weight while taking the medication, contact a doctor prior to starting the diet.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Coumadin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
