What is Crestor?
Crestor works by reducing the levels of “bad” cholesterol (low density lipoprotein) and increases the levels of “good” cholesterol (high density lipoprotein) in the body. The active ingredient rosuvastatin Is classified as a statins, also known as a HMG CoA reductase inhibitor type of medication. It can also be used to decrease the production of triglycerides in the blood. The medication when used with regular exercise, weight loss and a proper diet can help reduce the risk of a stroke, heart complications or heart attacks.
How is Crestor used?
Crestor should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually once per day. The tablet can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their reaction to the medication. To decrease the risk of side effects, your doctor may gradually increase your dosage at the start of the treatment.
Adverse effects
Crestor may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Depression
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Joint pain
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Signs of infection
- Extreme fatigue
- Dark colored urine
- Jaundice
- Chest pain
- Muscle pain
- Memory problems
- Confusion
Warnings
Do not take the medication along with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium as it may reduce the absorption of the drug.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Crestor is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
