What is Cymbalta?
Cymbalta works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain to maintain mental balance. The active ingredient duloxetine is considered a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) type of medication. It is mainly prescribed to treat general anxiety disorders as well as major depressive disorders. Some people may also use the medication to treat osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy and fibromyalgia.
How is Cymbalta used?
Cymbalta should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times daily. To prevent nausea, the capsule should be taken with food along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not crushed, broken or chewed to prevent too much of the medication from being released at one time. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment can lead to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms and side effects.
