What is DICARIS?
Dicaris works by interfering with the growth of cancer cells and slows their growth and spread in the body. The active ingredient levamisole is considered an antineoplastic and immunomodulator type of medication. The tablets can be used in combination with chemotherapy in the treatment of colon, head, neck cancer and melanoma. Some people may also use the medication to treat parasitic worm infections.
How is DICARIS used?
Dicaris should be taken orally exactly as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with some food along with a full glass of water to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the medication. The doctor may request to have blood tests periodically to monitor the progress and side effects of the medication. The 50mg tablets should be taken by pediatric patients.
Adverse effects
Dicaris may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Mouth sores
- Mental or mood changes
- Decreased bone marrow function or blood problems
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
DICARIS is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
