What is Daivobet Gel?
Daivobet Gel is a combination medication containing calcipotriol, a derivative of vitamin D and betamethasone, a topical corticosteroid type of medication. The medication works by slowing down the rate of skin cell reproduction to prevent thickened or scaly skin patches as well as reducing swelling, itching and redness of the skin. It is mainly prescribed in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris and aims to clear patches of red, scaly skin called plaques as much as possible.
How is Daivobet Gel used?
Daivobet Gel is generally applied topically once per day, initially for four weeks unless otherwise directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The maximum recommended dosage per week is 100 grams. Prior to applying the medication, wash and dry your hands and the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area and gently massage it in until it disappears. It is not recommended to wear tight clothing or wrap the treated area with dressing unless instructed to do so by a doctor.
Adverse effects
Patients using Daivobet Gel may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Worsening of psoriasis conditions
- Itching, burning, redness, pain or irritation at application site
- Skin discoloration
- Skin thinning
- Stretch marks
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight
- Swollen hair follicles
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Increased level of calcium in your blood
- Extreme fatigue
- Swollen ankles or feet
- Increased thirst or urination
- Vision problems
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Daivobet Gel is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
