What is Dantrium?
Dantrium containing the active ingredient dantrolene sodium is considered a muscle relaxant type of medication. The medication works by relaxing the muscles and preventing spasms to help reduce any pain and discomfort. It can be used to treat muscle spasticity caused by conditions such as a spinal cord injury, strokes, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or other conditions.
How is Dantrium used?
Dantrium is usually taken once per day at first, then gradually increased to 2 to 4 doses per day. The capsules can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water. If the patient cannot swallow the capsules whole, it can be opened and the contents emptied and mixed well into fruit juice before taking the dose. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Patients using Dantrium may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Muscle weakness
- Vomiting
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Extreme fatigue
- Seizures
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Jaundice
- Change in urination
- Vision or speech changes
- Black or tarry stools
- Mental or mood changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Dantrium is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
