What is Daonil?
Daonil containing the active ingredient glibenclamide is considered a sulfonylurea antidiabetic type of medication. It is used along with a proper diet and exercise to treat patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by causing the pancreas to produce insulin and helping the body use insulin efficiently. Controlling high blood sugar levels will help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes can also help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
How is Daonil used?
Daonil is usually taken orally once per day in the morning or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day along with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. To reduce the risk of side effects the doctor may start the medication at a low dose and gradually increase the dosage.
Adverse effects
Daonil may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Heartburn
- Weight gain
- Joint or muscle pain
- Blurred vision
- Stomach fullness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Signs of infection
- Stomach pain
- Seizures
- Mental or mood changes
- Jaundice
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Dark urine
- Light colored stools
Warnings
The medication should be used by patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and should not be used by patients treating type 1 diabetes.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Daonil is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
