What is Depo-Provera?
Depo-Provera containing the active ingredient medroxyprogesterone is considered a progestins or a long acting reversible hormonal contraceptive birth control drug. The hormone works by preventing ovulation and causes changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for fertilized eggs to attach to the uterus. Some women may also use the medication to reduce pain caused by endometriosis.
How is Depo-Provera used?
Depo-Provera should be used once every 3 months (13 weeks) on the upper arm or buttocks or as directed by a doctor. The first injection should be given during the first 5 days of the menstrual period to ensure the patient is not pregnant. The medication should be given by a health care provider at an office or clinic. If you are administering the injection at home, do it exactly as instructed by your health care professional. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The medication can be used as birth control but will not be 100% efficient.
