What is Differin Gel?
Differin Gel containing the active ingredient adapalene belongs to a class of medication called retinoid like compounds. It works by affecting the growth of cells and decreasing swelling and inflammation of the skin. It is used to decrease the number and severity of acne and also to promote quick healing of pimples that do develop.
How is Differin Gel used?
Differin Gel is usually applied topically once daily at bedtime or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their reaction to the medication. Wash your hands and gently clean and dry the affected skin area before applying the gel. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the entire face or other affected skin areas. Do not apply the medication to broken skin and avoid getting the gel in the eyes and ears. Acne may worsen during the first few weeks of treatment and may take up to 12 weeks before the full effect of the medication is felt.
Adverse effects
Patients using Differin Gel may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Stinging sensation
- Skin redness
- Dry skin
- Itching
- Scaling
- Mild burning
- Worsening of acne
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Very red or irritated skin
- Intense burning sensation
- Eye redness
- Conjunctivitis
- Skin discoloration
Warnings
The medication may cause the skin to become more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid strong sunlight and do not use sunbeds while using the treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Differin Gel is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
