What is Differin Topical Cream?
Differin Topical Cream works by unblocking pores and preventing oil and dirt build up under the skin to reduce inflammation and swelling while also assisting the skin to renew itself. The active ingredient adapalene is a form of vitamin A that belongs to a class of medications called topical retinoids. The cream is mainly prescribed in the treatment of acne as it can help reduce the formation of pimples, spots and blackheads from forming underneath the surface of the skin.
How is Differin Topical Cream used?
Differin Topical Cream should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually once per day at bedtime. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Gently clean and dry your hands and the affected area with water and a mild cleanser prior to applying the cream. Spread a thin layer of the medication to the affected area and gently massage it in with a finger. Continue using the medication even if there are no initial signs of improvement as it may take up to 8 weeks or longer before you feel the full benefits of the medication.
Adverse effects
Differin Topical Cream may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Temporary worsening of acne
- Red or itchy skin
- Dry or scaly skin
- Warmth or stinging sensation at application site
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Do not apply the gel if your skin is sunburned, cut, broken or covered with eczema.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Differin Topical Cream is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
