What is Dilantin?
Dilantin works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity to stabilize nerve activity in the brain. The active ingredient phenytoin belongs to a class of medication called antiepileptics or anticonvulsants. The medication can be used to treat epilepsy or prevent and control certain types of seizures including seizures associated with head injuries or brain surgery. Some people may also use it to treat certain types of irregular heartbeats.
How is Dilantin used?
Dilantin should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 4 times per day. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Dilantin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Swelling or bleeding of the gums
- Constipation
- Loss of coordination
- Drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Headaches

- Numb or tingling sensations
- Muscle or joint pain
- Jaundice
- Slurred speech
- Blurred vision
- Sleeping problems
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Dilantin is not always suitable for all patients.
