What is Diprosone Ointment?
Diprosone Ointment containing the active ingredient betamethasone is a potent topical corticosteroid type of medication. The ointment works by decreasing the release of various substances that are important in the immune system which cause irritation, inflammation and swelling of the skin. The medication can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, lupus psoriasis, insect bites or stings and allergic disorders.
How is Diprosone Ointment used?
Diprosone Ointment is usually applied topically 1 to 2 times per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy. Wash and dry your hands and the affected area with mild soap and water prior to applying the medication. Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area and gently massage it in until it disappears. Do not wrap the treated area with dressing or wear tight clothing while using this medication.
Adverse effects
Patients using Diprosone Ointment may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Burning, itching or irritation at application site
- Dry or cracking skin
- Acne
- Skin discoloration
- Stretch marks
- Thinning of the skin
- Vision problems
- Excessive hair growth

Warnings
The ointment should not be used on the face, groin, underarm area and broken or cut skin.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Diprosone Ointment is not always suitable for all patients.
