What is Doxacard?
Doxacard belongs to a class of medications called alpha blockers. The active ingredient doxazosin can relax the muscles in the prostate to treat difficult or painful urination as well as urinary frequency and urgency. It can also help relax the veins and arteries to allow for smoother blood flow in the body. The tablets can be used alone or with other medication to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and hypertension. Some people may also use the medication to help the body pass kidney stones.
How is Doxacard used?
Doxacard should be taken exactly as directed by a doctor, usually once per day. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well as high blood pressure usually has no visible symptoms. The drug can be used to control symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and hypertension but cannot be used as a cure for the conditions.
Adverse effects
Patients using Doxacard may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Chest pain
- Vision problems
- Fainting
- Irregular heartbeat
- Jaundice
- Trouble breathing
Warnings
The medication may cause dizziness or fainting when you first start taking it, contact a doctor should you feel severe dizziness or feeling like you might pass out.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Doxacard is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
